Pest Control and Prevention For Utah Fruit Trees

Fruit Tree Pest Control In Utah

Fruit Tree Pest Control

Pest control for fruit trees centers around discovering and implementing the types of eradication methods necessary to preserve the trees. After finding and controlling the pests, it is important to determine the best types of measures to take to remove them. The two broad categories of common pests in northern Utah are diseases and insects.

Search and Destroy

One of the best pest control methods is to catch the problem early through scouting and inspecting all fruit trees on your property for pests. Experts recommend scouting at least every two weeks. You can also help determine whether the pests are disease- or insect-based by looking for certain indications. Leaves are great indicators of fruit tree health, and it is possible to see disease or insect damage under magnification. The fruit is the best sign of insect pests due to the damage insects inflict.

Disease Prevention

Fruit tree disease is a common problem, and one of the most common diseases in Utah is Coryneum blight (shot-hole blight), which can infect peach, nectarine and apricot species. At the beginning of the disease, black spots appear and later turn into holes, hence the name. Management includes removing all infected parts of the tree and creating a barrier between irrigation water and tree leaves, as water provides a rich environment for the disease to spawn. Another common disease that affects apple — and, on rare occasions, pear — trees are apple scabs. The name is derived from the lesions found on infected apples and pears. Separating irrigation water from tree leaves is also helpful here, as is planting scab-resistant fruit tree species, if possible.

Insect Prevention

The codling moth is one of the most common fruit tree pest problems. These moths often attack crabapple and pear trees. The moths are persistent and able to reproduce up to three times per year, making them extremely difficult to remove completely. Eradicating the codling moth requires the timely application of insecticide sprays due to their rapid reproduction throughout the year. The timing can change each year, depending on their reproductive cycles. Many other insects require the same treatment, and complete eradication is often difficult without the assistance of an expert.

In northern Utah, pest problems are too common in fruit trees and other plantings. The solutions depend largely upon the pest infecting the tree and the severity of the infestation. Because the steps needed to resolve the problem are specific and in-depth, professional exterminator services may be your best option.
