Fall lawn care is often neglected in northern Utah because, as the weather cools, thoughts turn from lawns and gardens to fall festivals and the upcoming holidays. Nevertheless, Provo-area lawns need care and attention all the way through November. Good care in the autumn gives your grass a great head start for next spring. Before you pack your mower and tools away for the winter, follow these simple tips as a last hurrah for turf care.
One Last Lawn Mowing
Give your lawn one last mowing to prepare it for the harsh winter season, with the mower height dropped to its lowest possible setting. Cutting grass blades as short as possible at the end of the growing season will enable it to better withstand snow, frigid temperatures and disease. Once your lawn turns brown and goes dormant, no further mowing will be necessary until spring.
Fall Lawn Fertilizing and Watering
Autumn fertilizing is important for next year’s healthy lawn. Utah State University’s Extension recommends fall fertilization at least once every three years, but annual application is optimal. The recommended application is one pound of nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet of grass, applied before the first snowfall. Use a formula of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0), urea (46-0-0), or whichever specific product is most appropriate for your soil and turf conditions. Fall fertilizing will assist the grass in storing an ideal level of nutrients in its roots, better helping it to resist winter weather.
Aeration and Weed Control
Aeration is crucial to turfgrass health, but this is especially true in the fall. Aerate using a core aerator and leave the cores in the lawn. This will encourage microbial activity and strengthen grass roots in advance of freezing temperatures. Finally, add a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn or to specific problem areas along sidewalks, drives and edges. This will help deter crabgrass and other troublesome annual weeds next year.
